Taking good care of your pet’s teeth and mouth helps support their overall health and well-being. Proper dental care can prevent tooth damage, decay, and periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease is a common, but serious condition that affects your pet’s gums and teeth. It begins with plaque buildup and can lead to tartar, painful inflammation, tooth loss, and even impact vital organs if left untreated. Regular dental care is key to keeping your pet’s mouth healthy and preventing long-term complications. We recommend that dogs and cats receive a full dental cleaning at least once per year.

There are also medical and behavioral benefits to spaying and neutering. Studies show that spayed and neutered pets live longer, healthier lives. Although spaying and neutering reduce hormone levels and may, in specific cases, be delayed until adulthood, the benefits overwhelmingly outweigh the risks in most situations. 

Spaying removes a female animal's ovaries and uterus. This can help eliminate many reproductive-related complications and eliminate the need to manage pet menstruation. It also eliminates the risk of a life-threatening uterine infection called pyometra, which requires emergency surgery. 

Neutering removes a male animal’s testicles. This can help regulate hormonal surges that can cause hyperactivity, irritability, and aggression. By neutering male pets, it can improve mood, behavior, and interactions with people and other animals. Neutering can also help prevent testicular cancer, prostate issues, and other hormone-related diseases as well as inappropriate marking.

As pets age, masses can develop anywhere on or in their body; these masses can be anything from a minor unsightly annoyance to signals of life-threatening disease. Usually, we will start with a procedure called a fine needle aspirate where we use a small needle to obtain a sample of cells submitted for a cytology. If we are not able to get an answer that way, we perform a biopsy, which is a minor surgical procedure in which we get a small portion of the mass for evaluation in the lab. These tests guide us for the best method of removing the entire mass, and if any additional pre-operative diagnostics are needed for cancer staging.  

It can be scary to hear the word “mass” when discussing your pet’s health. However, masses are a fairly common occurrence in pets and can be quickly and easily treated when caught early. While many masses on pets are benign (harmless, not cancerous), it is still important to have it checked out by a veterinarian. If a lump has grown or you've noticed any other changes in your pet, investigation is crucial. Other masses may represent a cancerous process, meaning the mass is more likely to grow into underlying tissues or spread to other areas of the body if it is not removed. Book a lump examination appointment with your primary care veterinarian and they can determine if it poses a risk to your pet’s health through a process called fine needle aspiration. 

Depending on your pet’s diagnosis, your veterinarian may recommend surgical removal of the mass. This prevents the mass from causing problems like growing too large, damaging surrounding tissue or spreading to other places within the body.  

Many lumps found on pets are on or just below the surface of their skin. In these cases, mass removal can be completed at your Thrive Pet Healthcare primary care clinic through a quick and easy surgical procedure. 

Some masses may be more complex depending on their location. Your Thrive primary veterinarian will work with you to determine whether the mass can be addressed at our hospital or if a referral to a veterinary specialist is recommended.      

With any mass removal surgery, we will recommend that the removed tissue is sent to our lab (aka histopathology), so our pathologists examine the growth and determine if surgery was curative or if any other action needs to be taken.  

Many types of cancers in dogs and cats can be cured simply by being diligent about having your pet's masses examined and removed as soon as possible. 

Unfortunately, dogs and cats can eat things they shouldn’t, and when these "foreign bodies" become lodged in the gastrointestinal tract, surgical removal may be necessary. We are equipped to handle many simple foreign object removal procedures within the primary care setting; however, depending on the object, its location, and your pet’s overall health, referral to an emergency or specialty hospital may be required.
