Vaccinations

Vaccines are essential and can provide a higher chance for a long and happy life. When pets are fully vaccinated, several highly contagious illnesses can be prevented or lessened in their severity of symptoms if ever contracted. Some diseases, such as leptospirosis, can even be transmitted to humans, putting humans at risk if pets do not have adequate protection. 

There are several core vaccines for both cats and dogs. There are also additional optional vaccinations that may be relevant for a pet’s health dependent on area and age. For more information on recommended vaccines, book a wellness appointment with our veterinarians today. 

It is typically recommended that cats and dogs begin receiving their core vaccines at around six to nine weeks old.  However, it is never too late to start vaccinating against life–threatening illnesses. If you recently adopted an older pet that is unvaccinated or realized your current pet is not up to date, you can take them to the vet to start on their core vaccination. 

Some vaccinations, like rabies vaccine for dogs and cats, are only required every 3 years. Whereas some, like influenza and Bordetella, are needed every year to maintain their protection. Speak with your veterinarian regarding vaccination schedules to be sure pets stay up to date.

As with some human vaccines, there can be minor side effects in pet vaccines that typically disappear within a day or two. These include symptoms like minor redness around the injection site or fatigue. They are normal and will not harm pets in the long term. 

More severe reactions can occur in a small percentage of pets who may have underlying health problems. It is important to let our veterinarians know of any conditions or prior reactions a pet has had before their vaccination.   

If a reaction occurs after a vaccine, please notify our veterinarian as soon as possible as treatment may be indicated.
