SAN FRANCISCO (July 7, 2025) — A familiar name in San Francisco’s pet community is wagging into a new chapter. Starting today, Thrive Pet Healthcare partner,
Especially Cats Veterinary Hospital, is now Small Paws Pet Hospital, and for the first time in its 40+ year history, the hospital is opening its doors to
small and medium-sized dogs (up to 35 lbs.).
While the name is changing, the heart of the practice isn’t. The same team of friendly, familiar faces will continue caring for cats and now also for smaller pups, all under one roof.
“We’ve built our reputation on compassionate, personalized care, and that’s not changing,” said Mikey Gutierrez, practice manager of Small Paws Pet Hospital. “We’re simply making room for some small companions who need a trusted place to go and helping pet owners who have both cats and smaller dogs keep all their care in one place.”
The change also comes at a time when many local dog owners are struggling to find veterinary appointments due to a nationwide shortage of veterinarians.
“We realized we could do more for our community without losing what makes our hospital special,” Gutierrez added. “We’re still cat people at heart, and always will be, but we’re excited to welcome some well-behaved smaller dogs to the mix.”
Cat owners can rest easy: the hospital will offer “cat-only” days by request, creating a calm, dog-free space for feline appointments. The team, hours, and phone number remain the same:
Wellness Care That’s Easier on the Wallet
Small Paws Pet Hospital also offers the
Thrive Plus™ membership program designed to help pet owners save on routine and preventative care. Members get unlimited free exams, $5 nail trims, and 10% off services like diagnostic testing, dental cleanings, and spay/neuter procedures.*
“It’s a great way to stay ahead of your pet’s health while keeping costs manageable,” Gutierrez said. “Our goal is to make it easier for people to do right by their pets, without breaking the bank.”
