August 23, 2023 (AUSTIN, Texas) – As animal shelters nationwide commemorate National Dog Day on Saturday, August 26, a wave of canines will find their furr-ever homes.
Thrive Pet Healthcare joins the celebration by shedding light on the bond between humans and dogs, offering expert insights for seamless integration into the family pack.
Introducing a new dog to your household should be a joyful experience, but it requires careful planning and consideration to ensure a harmonious integration. Dr. Kelly Cairns, Vice President of Medical Excellence and Education at Thrive Pet Healthcare, emphasizes the importance of proper socialization and positive relationships to preserve the safety and happiness of all family members, both human and canine.
“Bringing a new dog into an existing pack requires patience, empathy and a thoughtful approach. You may have to double your efforts if you already have other pets in your household,” says Dr. Cairns. “Each dog possesses a distinct personality and history, and building a healthy foundation for interaction is essential.”
10 Tips for Introducing a New Dog to Your Household
Consider activity levels. Dogs with different age gaps may have varying activity levels. Ensure that the energy levels of the new and existing dogs are compatible to avoid unnecessary stress.
Respect unique personalities. Even if the dogs are of the same breed, they will have differing personalities that require time to harmonize.
Address past trauma. If you’ve rescued a dog, be mindful of potential triggers from their previous life. Trauma or instincts from the past may influence their behavior during introductions.
Provide separation. Offer alone time or separate spaces for the newly introduced dogs, especially if there’s an age gap. Older dogs might need respite from a lively puppy. Creative solutions like doggie fences or large crates can help ease the process.
Equal attention. Ensure both dogs receive personalized love and attention. A new dog’s arrival shouldn’t lead to neglect of the existing pet, which could cause feelings of loneliness and boredom.
Neutral meeting ground. Initially introduce dogs on neutral territory to prevent territorial disputes. Vaccination status should be considered for puppies. Do not bring dogs together if vaccinations are not current.
Leash and barrier usage. Leashes allow controlled interactions while providing an option for separation. Barriers can help manage introductions but beware if one or both dogs have barrier aggression.
Supervise interactions. Always supervise dogs’ interactions, particularly during mealtimes when resource guarding can spark unexpected fights. Feed separately, if possible. Also use treats and distractions to encourage toy sharing.
Adjustment period. Some dogs need time to adapt to a new companion. Allow a gradual adjustment period. Successful integration is a marathon, not a sprint.
Reward positive behavior. Reward calm and polite behavior to encourage positive interactions.
For those seeking professional assistance, Dr. Cairns advises, “A certified dog trainer or veterinary behaviorist can offer tailored advice to ensure a successful introduction. Consult your family veterinarian for recommendations.”
