Meet Dr. Sperry, an inspiring young veterinarian who will continue her journey with Thrive Pet Healthcare as a dermatology resident at Dermatology for Animals in Salt Lake City in 2025. Her path to veterinary medicine testifies to the power of passion, dedication, and the profound impact of the human-animal bond. Let's dive into Dr. Sperry's story and discover what drives this promising veterinarian.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?
Dr. Sperry: As a freshman in college, I volunteered with an equestrian occupational therapy program, which provided horse-assisted therapy for individuals with disabilities. There, I discovered the profound effect of the human-animal bond. This experience ignited my passion for veterinary medicine, where I can embrace my love for science while working at the intersection of human and animal health.
Q: How did your veterinary school experience shape your goals?
Dr. Sperry: I began veterinary school with a deep love for medicine and animals, but it was during my studies that I discovered my passion for client education. The communication courses I took during veterinary school taught me how to work with owners to tailor treatments to their goals and lifestyles. This passion for communication ultimately led me to specialize in dermatology, a field that relies heavily on education and fostering long-term patient-doctor relationships.
Q: Tell us about your journey with Thrive Pet Healthcare.
Dr. Sperry: I served as the first Thrive Student Ambassador for both Utah State University School of Veterinary Medicine and Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. It was a privilege to connect veterinary students with a company committed to innovation and support.
During veterinary school, I completed externships at several of Thrive's exceptional dermatology practices. I was impressed by Thrive's emphasis on culture, mentorship, and exceptional veterinary care. I knew then that I wanted to remain part of the Thrive community, where I could receive support to optimize my ability to care for pets.
I am thrilled to return to Thrive as a dermatology resident with Dermatology for Animals in Salt Lake City starting in 2025. It's an honor to continue my journey with a company that shares my passion for excellence in pet care.
Q: How do Thrive's values align with your personal values as a veterinarian?
Dr. Sperry: As a veterinarian, Thrive's values and mission resonate strongly with my own. Thrive prioritizes accessibility, affordability, and excellence in pet healthcare, which align perfectly with my commitment to providing high-quality care to all animals, regardless of their owners' limitations. Additionally, Thrive's focus on supporting veterinarians through innovative solutions and empowering them to better serve their communities mirrors my dedication to continuous improvement and community engagement in my veterinary practice. Overall, I feel a deep alignment between Thrive's values and mission and my personal values as a veterinarian.
Q: Can you share a memorable case from your experience so far?
Dr. Sperry: One of my most memorable cases involved a baby reindeer with an abdominal abscess (pocket of infection). This patient required collaborative treatment from multiple veterinary specialists and extensive hospitalization, including blood transfusions from other reindeer. It was inspiring to witness a diverse team of specialists come together as a care team to provide comprehensive help for the patient.
Q: What opportunities for growth do you see for yourself within Thrive when you start in 2025?
Dr. Sperry: As I step into my role as a dermatology resident with Dermatology for Animals in 2025, I'm excited for the growth opportunities within Thrive. The exceptional mentorship provided by the dermatologists and staff, and the caseload and complexity handled by Dermatology for Animals, will sharpen my clinical acuity and knowledge. Additionally, I am excited to be on the forefront of specialized medicine as I engage in research, continuing education, and the many collaborative meetings between Dermatology for Animals veterinarians across the country. I'm honored to learn from, and contribute to, the amazing Thrive team.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring veterinary students?

Engage in a variety of volunteer and medical/animal care experiences that resonate with you. Your optimistic outlook and kindness will pave the way for you in this incredible veterinary medicine community. Welcome to the vet med community!
