5 Quick, Easy Ways to Keep Your Dog Active
We all know exercise is good for both ours and our pups’ physical and mental health but in our busy lives, it can be hard to find the time to ensure our dogs are getting the essential activity they need.
To help keep your dog fit and healthy, it can help to incorporate their exercise into your daily life and routines. Below are some ideas for quick and easy ways to exercise your dog when you’re busy!
1. Bring your dog on errands

There are an increasing number of pet friendly stores and restaurants that your dog is welcome in. Whether you’re running to a DIY supply store or meeting a friend for coffee, there are plenty of places that your pup can join you. This not only provides additional time walking but enriches your dog’s day by introducing them to new sights, smells, and people.
You can easily look up dog friendly places online via sites like ‘Bring Fido’ to see if any line up with the errands you need to run, or simply call ahead and ask a member of staff at the store or eatery.
2. Walk as much as you can

Anywhere you’re walking, bring your dog along! If your kid’s school is local, walk your dog to pick them up. If you’re walking to or around the nearby farmers market, bring your dog. If you’re meeting a friend nearby, walk your dog to their house or plan to meet at a local park.
Although walking to places takes longer than jumping in a car, you are ticking off three tasks in one – getting to where you need to go, providing your dog essential exercise, and giving yourself an opportunity to get some fresh air too!
3. Go to the dog park

If your time is limited, a quick visit to your local dog park is a perfect option to provide essential exercise for your pup. The best thing about dog parks is that there are typically many other dogs there to keep your pup entertained. After a long day you can kick back, relax, and even meet other dog-lovers in the neighborhood without having to stimulate your dog’s exercise yourself.
Just make sure you are always keeping an eye on your dog at the park to ensure they are getting on well with other dogs there. Also remember to follow dog-park etiquette and pick up after your pup!
4. Play fetch with your dog

Although it may seem very simple to just play fetch, this wonderful game encourages your dog to run, search, and return – stimulating both their physical and mental health while also strengthening your pet-to-human bond.
For small dogs, throwing their favorite toy down a corridor for them to chase for 10-15 minutes can sometimes be sufficient to tire them out for a few hours. Whether you play fetch at the park, in your yard, or even while you’re sitting on the couch, your dog is getting exercise!
5. Consider doggy day care or a dog walker

Sometimes life just gets too hectic and there comes a point where our busy schedules just don’t allow us to give our pups the essential exercise they need. When this becomes a constant, it is time to consider enrolling your dog in a pet daycare or hiring a dog walker. It is important to remember that, although an investment, you are providing your dog with a happier and healthier life.
We know you would rather be the one to play with your dog all day, but when your time or career doesn’t allow for this luxury, you can find peace of mind knowing at least your dog is getting the necessary activity and interaction they need until you can be there to cuddle with them at night!
