AUSTIN, Texas (May 14, 2025) — After more than 40 years of serving Austin’s pets, the veterinary team, formerly Research Boulevard Pet & Bird Hospital, opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility at
5712 Burnet Road. Now operating under the name
Austin Pet & Exotic Hospital, the team continues its legacy of compassionate care in a modern space designed to support the health and comfort of dogs, cats, and exotic pets.
In a city where an estimated 83% of residents are pet owners, the demand for high-quality veterinary care continues to grow. The new 5,366-square-foot facility, nearly twice the size of the hospital’s previous home, features advanced digital X-ray and dental imaging equipment, a spacious surgery suite, and separate treatment areas for canine, feline, and exotic patients.
“This move represents more than just a change of address,” said Marlena Jones, Practice Manager. “Thrive Pet Healthcare’s investment in this expanded facility demonstrates a long-term commitment to serving the Austin community with the best veterinary care. Every detail of this space, from the cat-only waiting area to the upgraded diagnostic tools, was designed with both pets and their people in mind.”
Austin Pet & Exotic Hospital is a member of Thrive Pet Healthcare’s community of veterinary hospitals. The investment in this new facility reflects Thrive’s dedication to helping local teams deliver outstanding care to their communities, now and into the future.
“This hospital has been a trusted part of the Austin pet community for more than four decades, and I’m proud to have been a part of that legacy for the past 39 years,” said Dr. Paul Skellenger, veterinarian. “Our team brings decades of combined experience to the table, and this new facility reflects our continued commitment to medical excellence for every species we treat.”
Though the hospital's location and name have changed, its trusted team, including Drs. Skellenger, Anderson, and Mitchell, remains the same. They continue to offer personalized preventive care, dental services, wellness exams, diagnostic testing, and treatment for non-urgent illnesses.
Appointments can be scheduled by calling (512) 258-2577. The new hospital is located approximately seven miles from its former home on Research Boulevard.
