Our Equine Veterinary Services

At Pilchuck we offer 24/7 emergency care for your horse on a primary and referral care level. Our ambulatory clinicians are available to our clients and do their best to accommodate non-clients in the equine community within our call radius. Additionally, we offer a haul-in option to see an ambulatory clinician if you are located outside of our call range and your horse has not been seen by a primary veterinarian. Our ambulatory service also offers emergency care to small ruminants and camelids in a limited capacity. When calling our emergency line, please listen to the options carefully and make sure to leave a name, number, and nature of your emergency.
Our team of equine doctors see referral cases on an emergency basis 24/7. If your veterinarian determines that referral is the adequate course of action, please have them contact our emergency line. Our hospital has video cameras in all ICU stalls, climate controlled indoor stalls with direct oxygen hook up, and isolation stalls. We strive to accommodate all emergency calls but kindly ask clients not to directly haul in without direct verbal communication with our veterinarians first. Adequate communication allows us to provide the most efficient care of your horse.
With the industry wide shortage of equine practitioners, early communication and intervention is the best measure for a less stressful situation.
Types of emergencies that we often encounter are:
  • Colic cases that are not improving. Hand-walking and withholding feed is acceptable until further instructions are provided by a veterinarian.
  • Lacerations and wounds. Special consideration to wounds over a joint that may lead to infection. Pictures are welcome as injuries may look different after a few hours.
  • Lameness that is acute and severe in nature. Video recording and list of medications administered will help a veterinarian guide you.
  • Diarrhea, or soft feces progressing to diarrhea, should warrant a call to your vet as horses may become acutely dehydrated and systemically compromised.
  • Respiratory diseases that may lead to distress, fevers, or both
  • “Choke”, esophageal obstruction. Often associated with coughing and/or feed coming out of nostril. Water and feed should be removed.
  • “Dummy foals,” lethargic neonates, foals with diarrhea, or any abnormalities during early stages of life. Foals are particularly susceptible to infections that can be fatal. Early intervention is often warranted.
  • Mares that are having difficulty foaling. An emergency that carries a worse prognosis for the foal the longer it takes. It is important to know pregnancy history, due dates, and previous foaling issue.
  • Persistent fevers can be associated with lethargy or inappetence. It is prudent to isolate horses with fevers, snotty noses, coughs, or diarrhea until you reach a veterinarian.

We offer comprehensive wellness, preventive, and geriatric care, including routine vaccinations, dental care, fecal tests/deworming, and nutritional assessment. Our field ambulatory veterinarians work with you, whether your animal is an accomplished athlete or longtime companion, to provide individualized care.
