What to know about Interventional Radiology
Interventional radiology and endoscopy use minimally invasive, image-guided techniques to help doctors diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. These include many urinary tract issues, tracheal collapse, gastrointestinal, liver and vascular diseases, as well as certain types of cancer.
What is Interventional Radiology?
Interventional Radiology (IR) uses fluoroscopy (live X-ray) images to see inside the body without traditional surgery. With these images, our specialists can use a variety of lasers, catheters, stents, and other devices to relieve obstructions, treat cancer, and perform other minimally invasive procedures.
What is Interventional Endoscopy?
Interventional endoscopy (IE) involves the use of thin, maneuverable cameras that can be guided through natural body openings or small incisions to perform procedures. These techniques allow our doctors to reach different areas of the body without open surgery. Endoscopy allows us to treat urinary incontinence, remove bladder stones, relieve obstructions, remove foreign objects, place feeding tubes and more.
The Advantages of Interventional Techniques:
Provides access to areas of the body that would otherwise require invasive surgery.
Reduced risk of complications associated with traditional surgery like bleeding, delayed wound healing, and infection.
Shorter recovery times and less post-operative discomfort compared to traditional surgery.
Many procedures can be done on an outpatient basis, which reduces cost and avoids stressful hospital stays.
Additionally, interventional techniques may provide options for patients when there is not a standard surgical approach, or when surgery may be too risky.
